The Coffee with the Poet Series continues at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 as Asheville poet Kathy Nelson reads from her new chapbook, Cattails. With deep southern roots, both geographically and spiritually, Kathy Nelson spent her early childhood in Texas and visited extended family there well into adulthood. Although she left the fundamentalist church of her upbringing, after settling with her family in New Jersey she trained and worked as a non-denominational health care chaplain and has served as a chaplain in both nursing home and hospice environments. She began to write poetry seriously during her experience as chaplain. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The Cortland Review, The Edison Literary Review, Exit 13, The Great Smokies Review, Off the Coast, The Paterson Literary Review, Poets Online, Shot Glass Journal, Switched on Gutenburg, US 1 Worksheets, and other journals.

The Coffee with the Poet Series gathers every third Thursday and is co-sponsored by the NetWest chapter of the North Carolina Writer’s Network.  For more information, contact City Lights Bookstore at 586-9499.
