Conard receives Caregiver of the Year Award
Kim Conard of Waynesville was named Caregiver of the Year by the AHHC (Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina).
She was honored along with other winners at an annual awards luncheon in Raleigh Monday, April 29.
According to the nomination submitted by CarePartners registered nurse Laura Barton, Conard did a remarkable job of learning to care for her brother-in-law, a CarePartners Home Health patient, with no prior medical background or training.
According to the report, her brother-in-law developed a life-threatening infection last year which required multiple surgeries. He has chronic health issues including COPD, HTN and diabetes that affect his daily functioning and independence.
After a hospital stay, he moved in with Conard and her husband. This called for Conard to carry out detailed instructions for monitoring and maintaining oxygen equipment, continuing glucose monitoring, working with a wound vac and coping with a challenging colostomy. She also prepared special foods for him, administered his medications, performed wound care and help him with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living).
Conard is a 24-hour caregiver for all of his home needs, provides his transportation to appointments and helps him keep in contact with his family.
"She’s been great — I couldn’t have made it without her," her brother-in-law said.
Conard also provides care for her grandmother in a secondary role, assisting with communication with physicians and providing transportation.
"This family is blessed to have her in their lives," Barton said. "All of the visiting staff have been amazed at her extraordinary dedication and perseverance, seeing all the ways in which she goes above and beyond the call of duty each and every day."
