MAGGIE VALLEY — Connie Hiatt, 86, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, at The Homestead.
Connie was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and had resided in Haywood County since 1996. She was the daughter of the late C.B. and Ruby Pittman Van Landingham. Connie had a passion in her younger years for cooking, owning a restaurant in New York City, two inns in New Hampshire and one in Florida. Following her restaurant experience, she was the sales manager at the Sheraton Hotel in Philadelphia and later moved back to Florida to become an executive secretary to the vice president of Saint Leo College in Dade City, Florida.
At age 70, she entered Southwestern Community College as a culinary student, graduating two years later with honors. She enjoyed traveling throughout the world visiting many countries. She was proud to pilot single-engine planes and was once invited into the cockpit of the Concord aircraft while in route from Heathrow Airport in London to New York. She loved her twin Siamese cats, Sam and Sadie.
She was well known throughout Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Florida, the place she called home, and there she met her neighbor, Lee Hiatt. They later married in 1990 after both had lost their spouses.
A memorial reception will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at the Wells Events and Reception Center.
