Construction set to begin at Mauney Cove Convenience Center
At the Feb. 6 meeting of the Haywood County Board of Commissioners, the expansion and upgrade of the Mauney Cove Convenience Center located at 30 Mauney Cove Road, Waynesville, was approved.
Construction is set to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 14, and is expected to last until early June 2017. Announced plans to temporarily close the convenience center began this past November.
The Hazelwood and Jones Cove Convenience Centers will be open six days a week beginning the week of Feb. 13. Hours of operation will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. excluding holidays or inclement weather.
A temporary site is being completed on Elmwood Way about a half a mile from the existing site closer to the town of Waynesville.
David Francis, Solid Waste Administrator, said,
“The citizens need to be mindful that this temporary site is not made nor could it be constructed to accept all the volume from Mauney Cove Convenience Center," said David Francis, solid waste administrator. "We have created this site to help the elderly. If you can drive to the other sites, we strongly encourage you to do so."
The site will be one-way traffic only entering from the upper entrance of the Haywood County Senior Resource Center and circling through to the existing exit.
"This is not a perfect solution, but keeps a place in the community to help those who are unable to drive to the other sites during construction," said Francis.
The temporary site will only be open on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site will open on Monday, Feb. 20, at 9 a.m.
