Contract awarded to replace bridge in Haywood County

Apr 08, 2014

The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to replace a bridge over Jonathan Creek on Medley Drive in Haywood County.

The existing structure was reconstructed in 1961 and is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. That means that although the bridge remains safe for traffic, it was built to design standards that are no longer in use and needs to be replaced.

NHM Constructors, LLC of Asheville were awarded the $651,579 contract for the bridge replacement project, which also includes grading, drainage and paving around the structure. Construction can begin as soon as late April.

During construction, traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge. All work except reforestation is expected to be completed byJune 15, 2015.

This is one of the 25 road and bridge contracts worth $71 million recently awarded by NCDOT for projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were 1.2 percent, or $845,000 below NCDOT estimates.
