Depending on someone else to make a wedding a memorable experience can be nerve racking.  Laura Wehking, also known as the "Cookie Queen," will be a vendor at the third annual Blue Ridge Bridal Show at Lake Junaluksa's Shackford Hall April 5.   The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and open to the public.

“I have always enjoyed baking and cooking for my family and friends,” said Wehking. “And one day just realized I could be supplementing my income, which in this economy is nice to have the ability to do.”

Wehking started baking professionally in 2012. When she’s not “playing with food,” she’s a paralegal for Griffin, Wells and Queen in Waynesville.

“My co-workers are my closest supporters,” said Wehking. “The girls in the office will critique my creations and they go as far as displaying my cookies on their wall in their work stations by tacking the cookie bags up because, as they say, they are too pretty to eat.”

Wehking is also a member of Women of Waynesville who act as a large support group for her by promoting her business and purchasing her baked goods.

“I like taking on challenges regarding decorating and baking things I thought I wasn't capable of doing,” said Wehking. “Every day, I treat challenges as a learning experience. Most of the time I have a finished product I am proud of completing and it encourages me to keep trying new things.”

Wehking uses the kitchen at Herren House Bed and Breakfast for her baking operation.

“This all would not have been possible without Michelle Briggs, proprietor of the local Herren House Bed and Breakfast, opening up her commercial kitchen to use for my cooking and I extend my gratitude,” said Wehking.

When asked about business advise for others, Wehking stated that despite her baking being a secondary income for her, it is what she loves.

"I would think if you have a product or service that you feel that the community would benefit from, develop a business plan, take your passion and run with it,” said Wehking.

Come and visit her at the Blue Ridge Bridal Event to see what she her special baked goods.
