Cruso Friendship Club Holds 25th Annual Quilt Show

Aug 20, 2014

The Cruso Friendship Club will host its 25th Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Cruso Commnity Center, on U.S. Highway 276 S. Admission is free.

Most of the Friendship Club’s founding members knew nothing about “piecing a quilt top” or “quilting.” Thank goodness for two wonderful women, Jane Vokes and Pittsy Alexander, who instructed and guided the members in the art of quilting.

In 1989, the club did not have many quilts for the show, however, they improvised by displaying antique button collections, early 1900 fabrics and batting, sewing machines, antique quilt squares, wire pant and sock forms and a special painting of a quilter by Vokes.

Their first quilt was a hand-tied “string quilt,” second, a log cabin pattern and third, a sampler. Since 1990, all donation quilts have been hand-quilted. In 1994, the club began making a sampler of each donation quilt. These samplers are displayed in the entrance to the Cruso Community Center.

This year’s show features family antique heirlooms, traditional and artistic quilts, wall hanging and wearable art. There are antique sewing machines for sale, sewing machine repair and scissor sharpening service, fabric/quilting supplies and long-arm quilting information.

An old fashion bed turning with stories for each quilt, will be held at 10:30 a.m., 12:30, 3:30 and 5 p.m. Friday and at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday. Quilting technique demonstrations will be presented at 11 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m. Friday and at 11 a.m., 1 and 2 p.m. Saturday.

The lucky winner of our donation quilt, “Cabin Weave” will be announced at 4 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.  Proceeds from the donation quilt provide two scholarships to Pisgah High students, baskets for shut-ins and support community center activities..
