Dahlia contest winners announced

The end of August found the Haywood Public Library busy with 479 Dahlia fans voting for their favorite stem and arrangement.  Linda Boyd, chairman of the Waynesville Council of Gardens, and 18 volunteers from the Waynesville Garden Club and the Richmond Garden Club hosted the exhibit for a total of 11 local growers who entered 61 stems and six arrangements in the competition.  The excitement filled the air as one voter after another delighted in the awesome beauty of these glorious flowers.

First place winners in the stem and arrangement categories received a $25 prize and a blue ribbon. All other winners were recognized with ribbons.

The stem winners were:

— First place: Ken Zulla, for Stem #1

— Second place: Ken Zulla, for Stem #21

— Third place: Jackie Fitts and Ruby Evans, for Stem #62

The arrangement winners were:

— First place: Lucy Best, for Arrangement #31

— Second place: Ken Zulla, for Arrangement #50

— Third place: Haywood Community College, for Arrangement #34

— Fourth place: Ken Zulla, for Arrangement #33 —Fourth Place,

— Fifth place: Carolyn Shelton, for Arrangement #32

— Honorable mention: Carroll Grant, for Arrangement #100

Congratulations are in order for the growers and the volunteers who made this a very popular and successful Dahlia Exhibit for the citizens of Waynesville.
