Daniel L. DeWald
LAFAYETTE, INDIANA — Daniel Louis DeWald, 53, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away June 15, 2014, after a courageous 17-year battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Dan was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and spent his youth in Huntington, Indiana, and graduated from Huntington North High School in 1979. He attended Saint Joseph’s College and began his career at United Parcel Services in 1984 and was the pre-load supervisor at UPS in Lafayette, Indiana, until his health prohibited. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lafayette.
Dan was passionate about working in his yard, and particularly on his lawn, and could frequently be seen riding his John Deere tractor with his sheepdogs, Maui and Domer, by his side. He was a fervent and ever faithful supporter of Notre Dame football and was on campus for game day whenever possible, and when at home, his Fighting Irish flag flew proudly. Dan’s larger-than-life personality and sense of humor were cherished by his family and friends. The camaraderie and support of his UPS family were of special significance and motivation in his life.
Survivors include his parents, Edwin and Harriet DeWald, of Greenville, Tennessee; his brothers and sisters, Edwin DeWald Jr. and wife, Rachel, of Fishers, Indiana, Ellen and husband, Darryl Schultz, of Chesterton, Indiana, Jennifer and husband, Mike, and Thomas DeWald Sr., of Greeneville; and a special friend and caregiver, Trula DeWald, of Lafayette. Also surviving are nieces and nephews including Dominic, Gianna and Joseph DeWald, of Fishers; Andrew and Brennan Hollowell of Greeneville; Thomas DeWald Jr., of Leesburg, Georgia, and Kylee Grace DeWald, of Greeneville.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, John and Marie DeWald, and Clem and Geraldine Bowers.
Visitation will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette, and a celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. with Fr. Joshua T. Bennett officiating.
