Deadline nears for Haywood enrollment in nationwide cancer prevention study
The American Cancer Society is asking for your help to reach their goal for enrollment in Cancer Prevention Study 3. This nationwide historic study will help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer. Enrollment will take place Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Haywood Fitness Center. Medwest-Haywood is the host site.
“Our goal for Haywood County is 150 and we currently have 50 people signed up," said Sarah Gayle, community manager with the American Cancer Society. "So if you’ve been considering this opportunity to become part of cancer prevention history, please enroll today. We need everyone’s help to reach our goal.”
Men and women who are willing to commit to the study must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer. The study will enroll a diverse population of 300,000 people across the United States.
“This study is important to health care providers as well as our community so that we can limit or even end the horrible consequences of cancer," said Dr. Alfred Mina of Haywood Surgical Associates. “As is sometimes said, knowledge is power, and the more we can investigate causes, the more they can be addressed.”
To enroll, individuals must make an appointment online at www.cps3haywoodnc.org or through the toll-free number 1-888-604-5888 and then fill out a survey before their appointment. Participants will come to the Haywood Fitness Center September 17 or 18, sign an informed consent, have their waist measured and give a small blood sample. Over the course of the 20- to 30-year study, participants will be asked to fill out periodic follow-up surveys.
