Dementia-related activities training is Aug. 26

The Smoky Mountain Center, in partnership with the Southwestern Area Agency on Aging and Haywood Senior Resource Center, will host “Beyond Bingo: Meaningful Activities for Dementia Residents,” from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Senior Resource Center, located at 81 Elmwood Way, Waynesville.

This free training will be taught by Leslie Lawson, LRT/CTRS, QMHP with the Smoky Mountain Center’s Geriatric and Adult Mental Health Specialty Team.

This once a month series is offered to caregivers and others to provide hands-on tips and techniques. A variety of care giving events and topics will be discussed throughout the series.

This session will define and identify the importance of providing meaningful activities for individuals with dementia.  Participants will be assisted in choosing activities that are appropriate for the particular stages of dementia and learn skills to engage the individual in the activity.

Nursing home, family care home and adult care home staff members, family caregivers, adult day staff and senior center staff are invited and encouraged to participate. Continuing Education Credits will be provided.
