Disability awareness month is recognized in Haywood
Honoring National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is “National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” the month that Congress dedicated to increasing public awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. This year's theme is “Because We Are EQUAL to the Task," and it represents that people with disabilities have the education, training, experience, and desire to be successful in the workplace.
“As a community, it is important that we collectively recognize the importance of equal opportunity employment and honor those individuals with disabilities who persistently pursue their desire to work,” said George Marshall, the executive director of Haywood Vocational Opportunities. “It is also essential to identify those employers in the community that help these individuals to maximize their many talents. All of these exceptional people not only contribute to the economy in Haywood County, but they ultimately build the community that we live in.”
Most individuals with disabilities have the ability to work, they want to work, and they can work. By recognizing the value of persons with disabilities and employing them in today’s workforce we can help keep our nation’s economy strong; we can also help create career pathways, advancing opportunities and sound futures for disabled Haywood County residents.
There are a number of Haywood County employers that support HVO’s mission not just during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, but throughout the year by employing persons with disabilities and disadvantages. Marshall extends a special thanks for their partnership.
