Disaster drill set for Saturday

Aug 21, 2013
Emergency workers carry out a "burn victim" during a simulated propane tank explosion in November 2012. All emergency services personnel will be a part of a multi-agency training drill Saturday at Haywood Community College.

Traffic around Haywood Community College may be redirected or delayed Saturday, Aug. 24th, due to a training exercise involving multiple law enforcement and emergency management agencies.

The exercise, which will be coordinated by Haywood County Emergency Management and the Haywood County Fire/Rescue College committee, will focus on the ability of all agencies involved in public safety to work together efficiently during a chaotic and rapidly evolving emergency. The simulated incident may involve hostages, mass casualties, hazardous materials, fire and other issues. The Haywood County Incident Management Team will manage the drill.

The exercise is expected to take place mostly during afternoon hours on the 24th. Access to certain areas of the community college campus may be restricted during the exercise and nearby residents may experience the sounds of sirens and other sounds typically associated with emergency response activities throughout the exercise.
