WAYNESVILLE — Donald Dean Smith, 75, of 127 Dock Ratcliff Road, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Ben and Polly Ratcliffe Smith and was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Pace Smith, who died in 2006. He served in the U.S. Army as a Captain of a Merchant Marine ship. Donald Dean served Haywood County as the local bread route salesman for more than 37 years. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed gardening and being with his grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Allen Smith and his wife, Hope, of Spartanburg, South Carolina and David Smith and his wife, Cindy, of Waynesville; two sisters, Charlotte Parker and Lorena Smith, both of Waynesville; and two grandchildren, Harrison and McKinley Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Elizabeth Chapel with the Rev. Michael A. Shuford officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
