DOT starts tunnel work today

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will perform work on three tunnels in the Pigeon River Gorge on Interstate 40 in Haywood County beginning Monday, Sept. 10 until Friday, Sept. 28. This project will involve maintaining and inspecting the drainage system in each tunnel.

The work will take place on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The tunnels are located between the Tennessee border and Exit 15 (Fines Creek). Two of the tunnels are on the eastbound side of the interstate and one is on the westbound side.

Work on the first I-40 East tunnel, located between Exits 7 and 15, will take place Sept. 10-14. Work on the I-40 West tunnel, located between the Tennessee state line and Exit 7, will take place Sept. 17-21. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at the site of ...
