Dr. Lucy Gist

ASHEVILLE — Dr. Lucy Rhea Gist, 89, of Asheville, redeemed by God’s love, passed on to the Church Triumphant Friday, Dec. 28, 2012.
She was born on Nov. 7, 1923, to the late Rev. Mr. Joseph A.Gist Sr. and Veda Johnson Gist. Survivors include her brother, Joseph A.Gist Jr.; sister Jeanne Gist Hess; nieces, Holly Hess Hart and Barbara Gist Hannelore; nephews, David and Hayden Hess and Herschel Gist, all living in California; and seven great-nieces and nephews.
As a Deaconess in The United Methodist Church, Lucy dedicated her life to ministry primarily through Community Centers, with a focus on women, youth and children. She served both in the USA and in Korea. Following her retirement, she continued to serve as a volunteer in many church and community capacities. Lucy was known and loved by countless friends and co-workers across the USA and globally. She traveled to many countries, and greatly cherished the special connections she had with friends in Texas, the New York City area and around Charlotte, NC. Her zest for life was unsurpassable, and joy and laughter abounded in her daily walk. She delighted in collecting pigs of all sizes, shapes, colors, types, etc., which adorned tables, chairs, walls and shelves throughout her dwelling.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in the Memorial Chapel at Brooks-Howell Home, 266 Merrimon Ave., Asheville. The celebration of her life will continue with a reception following the service. Lucy’s ashes are to be scattered in the Rose Garden at Brooks-Howell.
Two of Lucy’s greatest loves were Bethlehem Center-Charlotte, 2705 Baltimore Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203; and Brooks-Howell Home, 266 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, NC 28801. Memorials may be directed to them or to the charity of your choice.
