Dragoons' home games on the radioPost 47, The Mountaineer and Clear Channel form joint venture to broadcast legion home games
The Haywood American Legion Post 47 Baseball Club, The Mountaineer Newspaper and Clear Channel of Asheville announced Tuesday afternoon they have joined in an agreement to broadcast live all the Dragoons’ regular season and postseason home games, beginning with the 2013 Opening Day game at 7 p.m. with visiting Henderson County Post 77.
“We are thrilled that our home games are on the radio station,” said Post 47 Athletic Director Larry Harbin. “The last time legion baseball was played in Haywood County was back in 1952. I’m sure listeners all over the area will enjoy this exciting new baseball coverage for our Post 47 Dragoons.”
WMXF will broadcast a nine-game home regular season schedule from May 22 through June 26 over 1400 AM The Peak and will stream these games live at www.http://themountaineer.villagesoup.com.
The play-by-play will be done by Chad Upton, who is also the voice of Pisgah High varsity football on 920 AM on Friday nights in the Fall.
“Growing up as a little boy, I remember my dad listening to AM radio at night following the Braves and Yankees,” said Upton. “There is just something ‘Americana’ about baseball and AM radio. I hope folks will want to listen in and follow these kids and really develop a sense of connection to what we are doing.
“Legion baseball in Haywood County was a long time coming and I just can’t wait to be a part of it.”
Upton’s sidekick will be color analyst Chris Collins, who played baseball for Mars Hill College and was also a three-sport standout at Rosman High.
“American Legion baseball has been a big deal for a long time all over the country,” said Collins. “I think fans will get a sense that they’re watching and listening to a really high level of play and it will be like having a minor league team playing right here in Haywood County.
“For everyone involved, it’s going to be a really exciting summer and I hope I can add to that experience.”
All home games will begin with a pregame show at 6:45 p.m. and the first pitch at 7:05 p.m., except the Wednesday, June 26 doubleheader with Cherryville. The Dragoons’ pregame show goes on the air at 4:45, with the first pitch of the first game at 5 p.m. from Champion Credit Union Ballpark (the spring time home of the Tuscola baseball program in Waynesville), which is next to Junaluska Elementary.
