In Loving Memory
CANTON — Fredric Drury Horton III, or Dru to all who knew him, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 12, 2017.
Dru grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he played in the ocean waves and learned to surf. He was the son of the late Frederic D. Horton and the late Kay Horton. Dru moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina in the early 1970s for the skiing, and never left.
He was a long-time employee at the Canton paper mill, now known as Evergreen Packaging, where he had many friends and touched many lives. Dru loved to play guitar and sing, and was always ready to help anyone who needed it. He was devoted to his wife, Sheree, and their church family. He was a loving father and grandfather, who was always prepared with a joke and a smile.
Dru is survived by his wife, Sheree Owen Horton; adult children, Kathryn and Peyton; a grandson, Samuel; a brother, Scott; his nieces; and an entire community who will feel his loss for years to come.
A celebration of Dru’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, near Lake Junaluska. The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Flowers are appreciated and may be delivered to the church.
Memorials may be made to The Community Kitchen, P.O. Box 513, Canton, NC 28716.
