Dulcimer masters to perform at WCU on July 17
CULLOWHEE – The dulcimer masters from the staff of Western Carolina University’s annual summer dulcimer conference will be featured in concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Eleven dulcimer players, including five who have earned the title “national champion,” will be presented in a concert in the round.
The lineup of performers includes 19-year-old Sarah Morgan, a current national champion, and 85-year-old Ralph Lee Smith, who will provide a historical perspective of the dulcimer as he performs traditional folk songs.
Joining Morgan and Smith on stage will be Janita Baker, whose playing reveals ragtime influences; Sue Carpenter demonstrating her finger-style expertise; Gary Gallier, who will share his own dulcimer compositions; and Madeline MacNeil demonstrating her vocal skills while playing the dulcimer. Also performing will be Lorinda Jones, Jim Miller, Joe Collins, Marsha Harris and Elaine Conger.
All the performers will be working with student players at WCU’s 14th annual Dulcimer U Summer Week, which will be held at the university Sunday, July 14, through Friday, July 19.
The concert is open to the public and admission is $12. Tickets will be available beginning Tuesday, July 9, at the Bardo Center box office or by calling the box office at 828-227-2479 or going online tobardoartscenter.wcu.edu.
