JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA — Eddie Stewart Gibbs, 74, passed away peacefully June 8, 2014, surrounded by his family at the Community Hospice McGraw Center. Eddie was born in Lake City, Florida, and was a long-time resident of Jacksonville. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Lorraine.
Eddie retired from the city of Jacksonville as division chief of printing and storeroom and owned Eddie's Bar-B-Que in Maggie Valley after retirement. He was a veteran that served in the United States Army's 69th Engineering Company (Topo Corp). He was a devoted husband, loving father and compassionate Christian that served as a role model and friend to many in the community and his beloved church, Hogan Baptist.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Pendergrass, Sheri Sheppard; sons, Gary Crotty (Patricia), Duane Gibbs, Mark Gibbs (Lisa); eight grandchildren; and his brother, Perry Gibbs.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday June 10, at Hardage and Giddens Chappell Hills Funeral Home, located at 850 St. Johns Bluff N., Jacksonville, FL 32225. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Hogan Baptist Church, located at 8045 Hogan Road, Jacksonville, FL 32216, with the Rev. Peter Copeland Officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, located at 850 St. Johns Bluff N., Jacksonville, FL 32225.
