Loving Wife, Wonderful Mother

CANTON — Edna Caroline Messer Rathbone, a beloved wife and mother, 78, of North Main Street, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, Edna was the daughter of the late Vincent Medford and the late Cumi Long Medford. She was employed at American Enka Corp. for 13 years and was later employed with Champion International, where she retired with 23 years of dedicated service. Edna enjoyed reading, especially her Bible, and also loved to sing. She was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed growing beautiful flowers in her yard that were admired by everyone. Edna was a wonderful cook and her delicious chicken and dumplings and biscuits and gravy were two favorites of everyone. Her love and devotion to her husband and her children will be held in their hearts and cherished forever.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Bill Rathbone; her daughter, Vickie Davis, and her husband, the Rev. Donald Davis, of Greenwood, South Carolina; her sons, Len Rathbone, of Canton, Michael Rathbone, of Canton and Billy Rathbone, of Arden; grandchildren, Jason Davis, Shannon Davis, Sabastian Rathbone; great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Cooper; and nieces, Darlene Wilson, of Brasstown, and Shirley Black, of Hickory.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, in the chapel of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home. Edna’s son-in-law, the Rev. Donald Davis, will officiae. Entombment will follow at the Horizon Mausoleum at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. Her family will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
