Dawn Ellis, RN, a nurse at The Homestead, MedWest-Haywood’s inpatient hospice care facility, was recently awarded the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
DAISY Award honorees personify MedWest’s remarkable patient experience, and consistently demonstrate excellence though their clinical expertise. They are recognized as outstanding role models in our nursing community.
Ellis, who has been a nurse since 1999, previously worked as a high-risk labor and delivery nurse in San Francisco, California, before moving to Haywood County and beginning work with MedWest-Haywood’s Hospice and Palliative Care team. Ellis’ dedication and compassionate personality afford her the perfect skill set for hospice nursing.
“What I enjoy most about nursing is direct patient care and working with families providing support and education on what to expect as patients make their final journey of life,” Ellis said.  “I love serving this community and love the diversity of its residents.”
These attributes and Ellis’ servant-like approach to nursing are clearly exemplified in the care she provides and are noticed by her patients and their families.
“Dawn really exemplified all the values you could ever ask for in a nurse. She cared for my husband as if he were her own loved one, and although he could not tell her, she instinctively knew what to do to make his last days as comfortable as possible,” said the wife of a hospice patient. “She spoke to him so lovingly and thanked him for allowing her the honor of caring for him.”
In her personal time, Ellis enjoys gardening, spending time outdoors, and traveling to visit family, something she truly values, especially due to her line of work.
“I value every moment I am able to spend with them as we all know life is so short,” she said. “I feel blessed to be part of MedWest-Haywood. The passion for excellence is a huge part of what I believe in, not just professionally, but personally.”
The DAISY Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in honor of Pat Barnes, a California resident who died from auto-immune disease in 1999. Pat’s family founded DAISY, which stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, to recognize the outstanding and compassionate nursing care Pat received during his illness. As part of that recognition, they also included the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, which has been used to recognize exceptional nurses in hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the United States. MedWest is proud to be a DAISY Award Hospital Partner, recognizing three of our nurses with this special honor every quarter.
Each DAISY Award Honoree is recognized at a public ceremony in their unit and receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled "A Healer's Touch."
