Elsie Mae Smathers
Waynesville — Elsie Mae Smathers, 94, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. She was born in Haywood County March 21, 1919, to the late Frank David and Maude Derrick Smathers.
Elsie was a lifetime member of Red Bank Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and former choir director. Mamaw Elsie was deeply loved by her family and her church family. Everyone who knew her enjoyed her company. She was a sharp-minded lady who had a wonderful sense of humor right up to her final hour. Elsie will be missed, but she is in Paradise now.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Robert Smathers and one sister, Ethel Seager.
Left to cherish her memory are one son, Dale Smathers and his wife Linda; granddaughter, Cristy Patten, her children Ben and Lucie and their father, Dr. Read Patten; and granddaughter Brooke Roberts, her husband Sam and their daughter, Isabella. She is also survived by one sister, Louise Hill, and many cousins, nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Revs. Danny Long and Jack Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Red Bank Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Red Bank Baptist Church at 330 Red Bank Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
