WAYNESVILLE — Eugene “Gene” Tyson, 76, of Rolling Green Retirement Community, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014.
A native of Nash County, Gene resided in Haywood County for 41 years before moving to Greenville, South Carolina, to be closer to his grandchildren. He was the son of the late Luther Eugene and Bessie Cooper Tyson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iona Jones Tyson, who passed away in 1997; and a sister, Christabell Tyson. Gene was a veteran of the United States Air Force and retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation with 30+ years of service. After retirement, Gene enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his friends. His biggest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by two daughters, Jeanie Tyson and her partner, Marilyn Parker, of Raleigh and Sherri Richards and her husband, John, of Simpsonville, South Carolina; a sister, Doris Temple of Raleigh; and two grandchildren, Hanna and Zac.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with the Rev. Robert Prince officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the chapel.
