To celebrate Friends’ 20th anniversary, each hike this year honors an achievement or cause that Friends of the Smokies has supported in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Friends of the Smokies, through the help of individuals, foundations and businesses like Wells Fargo, helps protect hemlock trees from the invasive hemlock wooly adelgid. To date, more than 200,000 individual hemlocks have been hand-treated, and more than 4,400 acres of hemlock-dominated forest have been set aside as special conservation areas.
