Filing period nears for school board, sanitary district seats
Those interested in serving on the Haywood County Board of Education or as members of either the Junaluska or Maggie Valley sanitary districts can file for office as early as July 7.
School board positions in Bethel, currently occupied by Larry Henson, Clyde, a seat currently held by Jimmy Rogers, Crabtree/Iron Duff, a seat held by Bob Morris, and Fines Creek, a seat occupied by Steven Kirkpatrick, as well as an unexpired Beaverdam term, to which Walt Leatherwood was appointed.
The filing period opens at noon July 7 and ends at noon July 18. Other than the unexpired term, which will be for two years, the other terms are four years. Those filing for the school board must live within the district they file for, but will be elected countywide.

There will be an election to fill the unexpired term of John McCracken, who passed away, and served on the Junaluska Sanitary district, as well as seats currently occupied by Dan McCracken and Jim H. Francis. This is a five-member board.
In Maggie Valley, the seat currently occupied by Jack Leatherwood Jr. will be up for election for the sanitary district, which is governed by a three-member board.
There is a $10 filing fee for those seeking a school board post.
Currently, candidates seeking a position on the Haywood County Soil and Water Conservation District can file for the post. Seats now filled by Charles Boyd and Robert Cathey are both up for election.
The filing period opened June 9 and closes at noon, July 7.
