Fire near Harmon's Den closes roads

U.S. Forest Service firefighters are suppressing a small wildfire in the Harmon Den area of the Appalachian Ranger District, Pisgah National Forest.

Forest Service Road (FSR) 148 (Cold Springs Rd.) and FSR 148A (Brown's Gap Rd.), as well as the Max Patch parking lot, will be temporarily closed to the public due to wildfire activity. Additionally, the Harmon Den campground and picnic area will be temporarily closed. Smoke will be visible in the Pigeon Gorge along I-40. NCDOT has message boards and a website notifying the public.

The wildfire is 75 acres in size and is expected to grow to 100 acres by the end of the day. Firefighters are establishing fire lines and conducting back-burning operations to contain the wildfire.

Asheville Hotshots firefighters are on the scene with several local engines and other personnel. Resources from other states may soon assist. The Forest Service is investigating the cause of the wildfire.

No structures are threatened, and no injuries are reported.
