Fireman dies at home in a Canton area fire
At 6:59 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, Canton Fire Department, North Canton Fire Department, Canton Police Department, and the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a fire call at 143 Pandora Circle in Canton.
Upon arriving, fire fighters found flames showing at the home. Emergency personnel worked their way inside and found resident Brandon Burgess, age 28, unconscious. Burgess was transported to MedWest Haywood, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Burgess had been a volunteer fireman with North Canton Fire Department since 2005.
“Brandon was a loyal, dedicated firefighter,” said North Canton Fire Chief Steve Kelley. “Any time we called on him, any time we needed him, he was there. He will be sorely missed by his brother firefighters, his family, and the community.”
The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing, and is being conducted by the Haywood County Fire Marshal’s office and the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office.
“The Sheriff’s Office shares in grief for the family of Brandon Burgess and North Canton Fire Department,” said Haywood County Sheriff Greg Christopher. “We share a bond with fellow emergency responders, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his fellow firefighters during this difficult time.”
