Haywood Post 47 is making the call for any area baseball player to join its “Special Forces.”
The Waynesville-based Haywood American Legion Post 47 will hold a baseball sign-up session for its junior legion 15-and-under  Special Forces team at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Tuscola Ballpark, which is next to Junaluska Elementary School on Asheville Road.
The Special Forces will become Haywood Post 47 Baseball Clubs’ third American Legion club (second junior club) and by design will be a development team for players ages 13 to 15 years old.
According to the American Legion baseball rule book, players must be a minimum age of 13 as of Jan. 1, 2015 to play in the 2015 season.
“We are excited to sponsor another ballclub in conjunction with our American Legion Post 47,” said Commander Ken Rector. “It’s another opportunity for our young men to play ball, develop their baseball skills and eventually move up to play for our senior legion club.”
Haywood Post 47 started a 19-and-under senior team (Dragoons) in 2013, then added a 17-and-under junior legion club (Doughboys) in 2014. The Special Forces (15-and-under) will play a full legion schedule from mid-May through late July and will continue to play games in showcase tournaments through the fall of 2015.
Junior Legion baseball provides a exciting and challenging form of baseball for players age 17 and under.  The program is structured to provide players an opportunity to develop their baseball skills, personal fitness, leadership qualities as well as to prepare  them for its Dragoons senior legion ballclub.
