FOCUS plans Pigeon River Fest
CANTON — Following their announcement that the 11th annual Mountain "Mater Fest has been cancelled this year, FOCUS on Canton has planned a new event to take its place.
The volunteer organization, which is not affiliated with the town, was formed in 2004 as an effort to bring more events to downtown Canton. With some members leaving the group for medical reasons, the group was only left with about five people to put on the large event.
Instead of the Mater' Fest, this year FOCUS will hold the first Pigeon River Fest on Aug. 23. Events and booths will begin at Riverview Farms and follow the river trail to the Canton Recreation Park all the way to the tennis courts, said Deborah Reed, FOCUS president.
"It's going to be a lot of fun. We're going to have various music and vendors along the river, have some fishing off the deck and we're just looking for a really laid back, enjoyable day on the river," she told the board.
She also reminded the board and audience that the Canton Farmers Market and Heritage Crafts will start back up from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8 with about 22 vendors.
"We have several events planned throughout the season. Every Thursday at the market something special will be going on," she said.
On Aug. 7, the farmers market will have extended hours with entertainment and a special focus on tomatoes.
The group is also bringing a carnival to town from June 18 through June 22.
As always, she invited the board and the public to attend the next FOCUS meeting at Papertown Grill in downtown Canton at 6 p.m. They will be saying goodbye to two integral members of the group who are moving away. Anyone interested in volunteering for the group are encouraged to attend.
