FOL annual meeting a success
The annual meeting of Friends of the Haywood County Public Library was held on May 6 at First United Methodist Church in Waynesville with almost 200 in attendance. During the business session, officers and board members were elected.
The officers and board members effective June 1 are President Elaine Stewart, Vice President Kevin Murphy, corresponding secretary Rebecca Cedrone, recording secretary Nancy Mazzarella, treasurer Bill Tennett and six directors, Susan McKinney, Sandy Denman, Marilyn Sullivan, Linda Arnold, Russell Smith and Kent Stewart.
Lane Messer, recently retired with 39 years of service with the library, was recognized as Friend of the Year. Lane was involved with the first Friends’ book sale in the yard of the old library with artwork hanging from a line.
Stewart recognized the Friends’ Spelling Bee team that won the Kiwanis Spelling Bee in April.
The speaker for the evening was Lee Smith, award-winning North Carolina author. She has written eight novels and four collections of short stories.
She spoke about her latest book, “Guests on Earth,” that is set at Highland Hospital in Asheville, the mental hospital that cared for Zelda Fitzgerald.
After reading some excerpts from her book, Barbara Bates Smith performed a skit inspired by the book. Jeff Sebens, who played the dulcimer, accompanied her. Lee took questions from the audience and autographed books sold by Blue Ridge Books. Kanini’s Catering provided refreshments.
The Annual Meeting Committee, Susan McKinney, Gale Roberson and Pat Tolar, were recognized for their efforts in making the annual meeting a great success.
