Folkmoot fans gather, raise funds
CANTON — Folkmoot supporters gathered at a fundraising event in Canton last week to reconnect before the July festival — and help ensure there are enough funds to cover the expenses.
So far, the event has raised more than $11,000 from sponsorship fees, ticket sales and auction item bids.
Folkmoot has an annual budget of $350,000, the bulk of which is used for basic operational costs to provide food and transportation for visiting groups who are based in the Hazelwood center for nearly two weeks as they entertain in the region.
Tickets are now on sale for the 2014 festival, which will be held from July 18 to 27.
Countries invited for this year's event include: Taiwan, Turkey, Trinidad, Colombia, Russia, Romania and USA — Hawaii. Also invited to perform are the Warriors of Anikituwah and Tsalagi Touring Group from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, as well as Appalachian bluegrass musicians and clogging groups.
