Forest Service issues bear alert for Haywood

May 15, 2013

The U.S. Forest Service is urging campers and visitors to the Shining Rock Wilderness and other parts of the Pisgah National Forest to be on the lookout for black bears.

Warmer weather means more bear activity and campers have already encountered some problems. The three incidents have involved bears rummaging through campsites and taking food. According to the alert from the forest service, a bear recently accessed food that a camper hung in a tree.

There were no injuries or property damage, but a bear encounter can be dangerous.

The forest service offers these tips for campers:

  • Do not store food in tents
  • Hang food in a tree or in another secure container 150 feet away from camp
  • Clean up food or garbage around fire rings, grills or other areas of camp
  • Do not leave food unattended
