Fred Buffin Calhoun
WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA — Fred Buffin Calhoun, 82, went to his eternal home with his Lord and Savior Christ Jesus April 17, 2013, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage, as a result of a fall due to Parkinson’s and dementia. He was a faithful servant in many church activities and ministries throughout his life, but enjoyed singing for the glory of God the most with his beautiful tenor voice.
Fred was born in Montgomery County and grew up in Haywood County, where he was very active in many school activities and sports. He received a music scholarship to Western Carolina University. After serving in the U.S.Army, he worked at the Newport News Shipyard and was on the Newport News police force before starting his own sign company in Hampton.
Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting, training bird dogs and retrievers, golfing and flying. He was an instrument rated pilot and accomplished artist. Fred was blessed with a gentle, kind, and loving spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dee Ann; his children, Janet Chambers of Canton; Cliff Calhoun of Alpharetta, Georgia; and Jeff Calhoun of Denver, Colorado; and his sisters, Kathleen Perry of Raleigh, and Julia Ann Wilson of Winston-Salem. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Elizabeth Calhoun; his sister, Mary Ellen Jaynes; his brother, John C. Calhoun; and two sons, Randy and Cranston Calhoun.
