Free marimba and guitar concerts April 1 and 3 at WCU
CULLOWHEE – Solo marimba virtuoso Andy Harnsberger will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 1, in the recital hall of the Coulter Building on the campus of Western Carolina University.
The concert, free and open to the public, was rescheduled when inclement weather prompted the postponement of a Harnsberger performance earlier in March.
Harnsberger will lead a marimba master class, also free and open to the public, at 2:30 p.m. in the Coulter space. He earned his doctoral degree at the Eastman School of Music, is director of percussion studies at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., and is active throughout the year as a freelance percussionist and recitalist. His appearance is sponsored by the WCU Visiting Scholars Program and the WCU School of Music.
At 7:30 p.m. April 3, WCU’s Jazz Guitar Ensemble will perform a concert featuring the music of two jazz-rock fusion pioneers, keyboardist Chick Corea and drummer Billy Cobham.
The concert, in the recital hall of the Coulter building, is free and open to the public.
Corea and Cobham led ensembles in the early 1970s that combined elements of jazz improvisation with rock drums, electric bass and electronic keyboards.
