The Friends of the Haywood Library Book Sale Committee has been working since last year’s sale. This year there is the largest collection of nonfiction books ever assembled. The books are categorized by subject for easy browsing. There is an expansive collection of recent biographies. In the children’s section there is an especially large number of small books for new readers. As always there are hundreds of cookbooks, westerns, light romance. For those with eye sight problems, there are large print books. In the religion section there is a large collection of books for devotionals.
But the sale is not limited to books only. There are all forms of music from CDs, cassettes, to sheet music and hymnals. For the vinyl collectors, there is quite a collection this year. In addition one can find puzzles, audio books, movies- VHS and DVDs. There are framed prints, diaries, games and various odds and ends.
The sale begins Thursday July 25 at 9 AM, running until 7 PM. Friday July 26 the sale runs from 9 AM until 6 PM and Saturday July 27 from 9 AM until 3pm ish. All books are out the first day. There is no restocking. Book dealers will have an area to place their books while they continue shopping.
The book sale is almost 40 years strong. All of the money raised each year goes back to support the Haywood County Library System. Funding for library systems has been cut each year by state, local and federal funding. The Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization that provides quality programs for the library patrons and the community for all ages. Funds supplement new equipment and materials for the library summer reading program for children, weekly programs for children at the library and at day care facilities. Books are taken to nursing homes on a regular schedule. The Friends have funded the new teen area on the main floor. Funds have also been provided for lectures, plays, concerts, book discussions, continuing education for the library staff.
Remember to mark your calendars, bring boxes and bags. Please no large strollers.
Volunteers will be needed again this year for the sale. If you are interested in working or if you have questions, call Sandy Denman, Chair of the Friends Book Sale Committee at 627-2370 or you can reach her most days at the library at 452-5169.
