Debra Frizzell, RN, an intensive care unit nurse at MedWest-Haywood, was  awarded the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
DAISY Award honorees personify MedWest’s patient experience, and consistently demonstrate excellence though their clinical expertise. They are recognized as outstanding role models in the nursing community.
Frizzell became a registered nurse in 2008 and has worked for MedWest-Haywood for more than four years. Known for showing the highest level of dedication and commitment to her job, her peers recognize her as an irreplaceable staff member.
“Deb is a supportive team player, realizing how to use environmental services to support her role. For a young woman, I feel she has talent and great ability, and is an asset to MedWest,” an environmental services coworker said. “She is calm under pressure and well-liked by myself and her peers. She deserves recognition.”
For Frizzell, nursing is not only a job, but a call to compassion and to serving her community.
“I love my patients and this community, and I sincerely mean it,” Frizzell said. “I treat my patients as if they were my own family, spending time with them, laughing and telling jokes to keep them in good spirits. I want to be able to leave the hospital at night knowing that I did a great job and that my patients had a good day with me.”
The DAISY Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in honor of Pat Barnes, a California resident who died from auto-immune disease in 1999. Barnes' family founded DAISY, which stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, to recognize the outstanding and compassionate nursing care Barnes received during his illness. As part of that recognition, they also included the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, which has been used to recognize exceptional nurses in hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the United States. MedWest is a DAISY Award Hospital Partner, recognizing three of its nurses with this honor every quarter.
Each DAISY Award Honoree is recognized at a public ceremony in their unit and receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled "A Healer's Touch."
