There will be a spaghetti lunch and dinner fundraiser for the David Plemmons van fund from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in the fellowship hall at North Hazelwood Baptist Church. Plemmons is a Haywood County native and many seen him “rolling” about town. His wife, Karis, works as a nurse for No Boundaries.
Plemmons was diagnosed with Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 10 and by age 21, he became wheelchair bound. He has overcome several obstacles in his life; one of which is the ability to drive. Most people in wheelchairs lose or never have that ability. Plemmons is blessed to be able to drive through the use of special computerized equipment.
His first van was funded through VR, when Plemmons was able to work. He is now unable to work and is not eligible for any type of assistance. His van was 10 years old and the equipment was so out dated, it could no longer be serviced. There were several occasions when the van broke down.
His friends, we felt as if he was no longer safe driving his old van. A 2007 Honda Odyssey with a lowered floor, computer system and ramp was purchased for him. Friends and donors have been able to raise enough money to pay the $72,000 loan down to $21,000, but they want Plemmons to remain independent as possible and their goal is to finish paying for the van this year.
During the Feb. 8 fundraiser, lunch (served 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) can be delivered, carried out or people maydine in. Dinner is dine-in or carry-out. The meal includes spaghetti, salad, roll, dessert and a drink. The cost for each meal is $8, and any extra donation will be appreciated. For information, call Colleen Williamson at 452-1132 or Ray Clark at 734-5601. Checks can be made payable to Jennings Plemmons.
