Gary Owen Morehouse

CANTON — Born Nov. 14, 1931, in Redding, California, to Celia and Ross Morehouse, his family moved to Miami, Florida, in 1933. Growing up there, he graduated from Miami Senior High in 1949, the University if Miami in 1955 with a BBA, and Florida Atlantic University in 1972 with a master of education, administration and supervision.
Employed by the Dade County Schools for 30 years, he was an elementary teacher, secondary teacher, athletic business manager, elementary assistant principal; and for the last 15 years, principal of Cypress Elementary School. He also served on the board of directors of the South Florida Educational Credit Union for several years and served three years as the president. Gary was also scout master for a large troop for several years. Upon his retirement in 1988, he moved to Haywood County. Gary was active in establishing the Tuscola men’s and women’s soccer teams. He was active in the Tuscola Athletic Club, serving for several years as president. He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Canton. Gary served as acolyte director, Vestry member, and Junior Warden.
Gary is survived by Mary his wife of 48 and a half years, three children, daughter Marcy Weiner, son in-law Rob Rynard, daughter Holly Morehouse, son in-law Nick Warner and son Gary ScottMorehouse, daughter-in-law Ellen Morehouse, three grandchildren, Jessica, Mark, and Caleb, abrother Lynn C. Morehouse and sister-in-law Marylin Morehouse, and his two dogs, buttons and bows.
Gary Morehouse passed away peacefully Sunday Dec. 8, 2013. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Canton.
