Get ready now for the Haywood County Fair
The Haywood County Fair will be Aug. 20-24, and preparations are being made now to ensure it is the best one yet.
Chickens, birds inspected Aug. 19
The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Veterinary Division has been advised that all exhibition chickens and other birds must be inspected and tested for the this year’s North Carolina fairs.
Anyone planning to display chickens or birds at the 2014 Haywood County Fair is asked to notify Erin Freeman at 456-3575 no later than Friday, Aug. 15.
All chickens and birds will be inspected and tested by state veterinarian Ryan Higgins from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Haywood County Fairgrounds.
Fish fry is Aug. 22
The 2014 Haywood County Fair Annual Fish Fry is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the Haywood County Fairgrounds.
The Fish Fry features tilapia, baked beans, slaw, hushpuppies, and a drink, all for $10. Children under 8 are free. Tickets may be purchased from the Haywood County Cooperative Extension Office at 456-3575.
The Annual Fish Fry is a fundraiser for the Haywood County Fairgrounds. Proceeds are used to help with operating funds for the Haywood County Fairgrounds.
Spelling bee Aug. 23
The County Fair Spelling Bee will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in the Apple Orchard Building on the fairgrounds, beginning with elementary level. Middle and high school levels will follow immediately after. Admission is free.
Public, private and home-school students students are welcome.

Beauty pageant Aug. 23
The Naturally Breathtaking third annual Miss and Master Haywood County Fair Natural Beauty Pageant will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23.
The pageant is open to all ages of boys, girls and adults. Participants do not have to be county residents. Attire is a T-shirt and blue jeans. All contestants will receive a tiara, sash, trophy and gifts.

Talent show Aug. 23
The 2014 Haywood County Fair Youth Talent Show will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. Children and youth of all ages and public, private and home-school students are eligible to participate.
Individuals and group performances are all welcome. Since this is not a competitive event, no one will be turned away.

This year’s Haywood County Fair will feature an expanded Viewing Zoo for the duration of the fair from Aug. 20-24. Included in the Viewing Zoo will be displays of farm animals and livestock, as well as a variety of non-farm animals and poultry or other fowl.
The zoo will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the fair, and will be located along the side of the Fairgrounds Livestock Barn and in the 32-stall Lions Club Horse barn.
