Golden, Turner win bronze medals at stateTuscola varsity girls score 13 points and in a tie for 19th place
GREENSBORO — The Tuscola girls track team didn’t finish high enough to receive a team medal, but freshman Brooke Turner and senior Sarah Golden earned a bronze medal each at this past weekend’s NCHSAA Class 3-A Track and Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track Complex on the campus of North Carolina A&T University.
Turner ran 5:17.53 in the 1,600 and was fourth, while Golden was fourth in the discus with a throw of 109-09.
The Tuscola girls scored 13 points and finished in a tie for 19th place with North Buncombe. Phillip O. Berry High (51) won the girls state team championship, while West Carteret (46) was second and Westover (43) third.
Other notable performance for the Tuscola girls at the state championships were freshman Allison Melrose, who finished 10th in the 1,600 with a personal best of 5:27.02. She also ran on the 4x800 relay team that finished 13th.
Senior Taylor Gibson finished 10th in the high jump with a jump of 4-10, Senior Caitlin Hines finished 12th in 300 hurdles with a time of 49.70 and Golden was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 34-03.50.
The lone Mountaineer representing the Tuscola boys at the state meet was senior Adam Silver, who finished 12th in the 400 with a time of 51.85.
Northern Guilford (57) won the boys state team championship, while NW Guilford (45.5) was second and East Henderson (43) third.
