Grace concert features signature winds
The second noon concert of the 2014 season at Grace Episcopal Church in Waynesville will feature The Signature Winds.
A Woodwind Quintet, this ensemble was formed in 2005 when sisters Pat Stone and Mary Thomas moved to Waynesville. Both had extensive careers in music and had played in woodwind quintets in other locales. They met Charles and Kathy Alley and Stephanie Lyon in The Haywood Community Band.
Each of the three had similar backgrounds to Stone and Thomas and had performed in woodwind quintets and ensembles previously. The group has retained the same personnel since 2005 and has rehearsed and performed regularly since its inception.
Signature Winds has performed in Haywood, Buncombe, Jackson, Swain, Henderson and Transylvania counties. Performance venues have included churches, schools, libraries and retirement centers as well as Lake Junaluska Assembly, Grove Park Inn and St. Mathias Chamber Series in Asheville.
The group frequently accompanies The Haywood Community Chorus. A third “Winds and Friends" concert is planned for summer of 2015. The Signature Winds perform a wide variety of music including: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, Pop, Liturgical and African-American Spirituals.
“Since the third Thursday of April will be Maundy Thursday this year, we will present this concert on Thursday, April 24, at noon,” said Series Director Charles Alley.
As usual, all concerts in The Grace Noon Concert Series are free and no collection is taken. Those planning to attend are invited to bring their lunches to be enjoyed during the concert. Tables and chairs will be in place.
The Grace Noon Concert Series is sponsored jointly by Grace Church in the Mountains Episcopal and The Downtown Waynesville Merchants Association. More information may be obtained by calling Charles Alley at 926-8721.
