On Monday night, Nov. 4, Grammy winner and six-time Grammy nominee Peter Rowan and his band will unofficially kick off their southeastern tour with a special performance at Cataloochee Ranch. This is the legendary singer-songwriter’s third appearance at the Ranch in the past three years, and the intimate fireside event is expected to be a sellout.
Peter Rowan first burst onto the musical scene in the early 1960s as a member of Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys and the co-writer, with Monroe, of the bluegrass classic “The Walls of Time.” He later became involved in an eclectic variety of rock, folk and bluegrass projects, including a memorable collaboration with Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements and John Kahn in the 1970’s bluegrass band Old & In The Way.
He embarked on a solo career in the late 1970’s and still tours internationally as a solo singer-songwriter. He also performs stateside with three bands: the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Big Twang Theory (and its Texas cousin Twang n Groove), and a rock band, The Free Mexican Air Force.
The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band’s first album, Legacy, was nominated for a Grammy in 2010. The band’s newly released album, The Old School, which will be prominently featured in the upcoming tour, is a 2013 nominee for IBMA Album of the Year.
Internationally acclaimed Tibetan singer-songwriter Yungchen Lhamo, who is currently working with Rowan on a project of new songs, will be joining the band as a special guest on the southeastern tour. Lhamo’s music has been described as “brilliant” (The New Yorker), “sublime” (Rolling Stone), and “spine-tingling” (The Times, London); she has been called “angel-voiced” (Newsweek) and praised for her “pristine, gliding vocal lines” (The New York Times). Rowan describes their songwriting collaboration as “Appalachia to Himalaya, mountain to mountain, the high lonesome call.”
A limited number of tickets for the November 4 show are available, and reservations are required. The $45 ticket price also includes dinner before the show. For more information, please call Cataloochee Ranch at 828-926-1401.
