GRAPPLE-THON — Pictured in the front row, from left, are the winners of the grapple-thon, Sarah Leogrande, in second place; Walker White, in first place; and Pat Ramey, in third place.

This past weekend, The Mountaineer Newsies and Tuscola High School Relay for Life teams joined together to host a Grapple-thon and self-defense class at the Tuscola gym.

This year’s West Haywood Relay theme is “Celebrating the Courage to Fight” — so it was fitting to have an event demonstrating jujitsu and self-defense training.

Armando Basulto with Gracie North Carolina Academy of Defense was gracious enough to teach the self-defense class and many students from Gracie participated in the arm bar contest.

the event raised more than $500 for cancer research on Saturday and students are still turning in their sponsorship money.
