Holidays can be the most joyful or the most painful days of the year, depending on how, or if, you've prepared for them. Holidays are especially difficult if you have lost someone you loved through death, divorce or other reason of separation. By planning ahead, however, and dealing realistically with your holiday expectations, you can help insure your days are filled with God's peace and joy (yes, even happiness and laughter) in the midst of underlying sadness.
Whether this is the first year or the 20th since the separation occurred, there are special adjustments you can make to diminish the fears as the holidays approach.
From 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 in Room 210 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, the focus of the Grief and Beyond support group will be on ways to cope with the holidays.
Anyone anticipating the holidays while grieving separation from a family member or friend is invited to attend. Park in the small parking lot behind the church and walk across the elevated sidewalk into the back of the church. Registration is requested but not required. For more information, call 456-3993.
