GSMR celebrates 25 years

BRYSON CITY — Celebrating 25 years of railroading excellence and enjoyment, Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (GSMR) is anticipating its “Silver Season” this year, with opportunities to explore Western North Carolina by train and delight in the adventure of railroad engineering. Special promotions and discounts will be offered this year as well as commemorative 25th Anniversary merchandise.

Continuing in year-round operation, January and February Saturday trains will be departing for a four-hour round trip Tuckasegee River Excursion from Bryson City to Dillsboro, with a one-and-a-half  hour layover, including opportunities for shopping and dining. The trips travel along the countryside of the Smokies, passing through the manmade Cowee tunnel and pass the movie set of The Fugitive, which stared Harrison Ford.

Special events for families and kids of all ages will be returning. Start with a Feb. 9 visit with The PEANUTS™ gang for the Be My Valentine Charlie Brown Express™. Snoopy and friends will be back again March 29 and 30 for the PEANUTS™ Easter Beagle Express™, with Easter egg hunts, prizes and candy. During the months of June, July and August on the Tuckasegee River excursions there will be western and storytelling characters on board.

Returning July 19 to Aug. 4, is  the DINOSAUR TRAIN™. Based on the award winning PBS KIDS® series, this event will offer learning and exploring. As autumn approaches, plan to enjoy the 12th Annual RailFest and Mountain Craft Fair Sept.14 and 15. October weekends bring the PEANUTS™ gang back for The Pumpkin Patch Express™. Activities include hayrides, trick-or-treating, and picking a pumpkin.  For a frightful adult event there will be the first Masquerade Ball the evening of Oct. 31.

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ returns Nov. 8 to Dec. 29, for a magical journey to the North Pole. Families will enjoy Christmas caroling, “Hot, Hot, Hot” chocolate, and a visit with Santa Claus, who will give guests the first gift of Christmas. Ring in the New Year in style with dinner, dancing, and enjoy a midnight champagne toast onboard the New Year’s Eve Gala.

The First Class and Family First Class options will be back. Traveling within the mountains of WNC, passengers enjoy a unique dining experience while our hosts serve and entertain. Relax in the comfort and style of vintage dining cars that feature large viewing windows and climate control. Enjoy lunch; unlimited soda, tea, or coffee in a souvenir tumbler; and receive a special gift. As always enjoy the popular Premium Open Air seating for adults 21 and up, with dining, beverage tumbler, and gift.

New in 2013, the Jose Cuervo car, where a taste of Mexican culture is served with authentic Jose Cuervo Tequila.
