Guest flutist to perform Feb. 6 at WCU

Jan 28, 2013

CULLOWHEE — The School of Music at Western Carolina University will present guest flutist Gabriel Dondi Goñi in recital Wednesday, Feb. 6.

The concert, free and open to the public, will take place starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Coulter Building recital hall.

The concert is unique in that pieces in the program will be performed entirely on instruments for which they were originally composed. The program will include Handel’s “Sonata in G Major” on the traverso (a Baroque flute) and harpsichord; Jean-Marie Leclair’s Opus 2, No. 1, “Sonata in E Minor”; “Suite Antique” by John Rutter on the modern flute and the harpsichord; and “First Sonata” by Bohuslav Martinů on the modern flute.

Goñi began his musical studies with Costa Rica’s National Symphony Orchestra, where he remains a flutist. In 1989, he joined the New World School of the Arts in Miami, later continuing his education at the Juilliard School in New York.
