Deeply Missed

ASHEVILLE/CANTON — Gus Albert Mills, 78, of Asheville and a former resident of Canton, entered his heavenly home Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014.

Gus was born Nov. 23, 1935, to the late Gus V. Mills and Leila Roberts Mills. He was a native of Haywood County and had made his home in Buncombe County for the past 56 years. Gus was a graduate of Reynolds High School in Canton and was a member of the of the football and basketball teams where he made many friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

He was a United States Air Force veteran and retired from Champion International.  Gus was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Canton. He was well known for his straightforward personality and his wit and he held a deep love for all children. He will be greatly missed by his family and all that knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Conley and Barbara Mills.

Left to cherish his memory are his nieces, Julia Hicks, of Denver, Colorado, Janice Martin, of Raleigh, Vera Wilson, of Canton, Camille McDowell, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Nancy Mills, of Canton; nephews, Phillip Mills, of Asheville, Randy McDowell, of Canton, and Billy McDowell, of Las Vegas, Nevada; Amy Gilliam, of Asheville, who was loved as a daughter; and a host of other great and great-great nieces and nephews and many friends.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Canton. The family will be receiving friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. The Rev. Robert Williams will be officiating.  Private interment will be in Gibsontown Cemetery.
