Guy Nelson Cromwell

SOUTHPORT — Guy Nelson Cromwell, 85, of Southport, formerly of Lake Junaluska, and Stuart, Florida, died Jan. 15, 2013, at home, with his family by his side. He was born Dec. 8, 1927, in Davis, West Virginia, to Guy and Iola Cromwell. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended Johns Hopkins University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1951, and a master’s degree in hospital management from Duke University in 1953. Guy also served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-48.
He was CEO of Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Florida, from January 1961 to September, 1989. Guy was president of the board of trustees of the First United Methodist Church in Stuart and served on the board of Long’s Chapel in Lake Junaluska. He also led many other local and state service and professional organizations including the Florida Patients’ Compensation Fund, which he was affiliated with throughout retirement.
Guy is survived by June McMillan Cromwell, to whom he was married 56 years; their four children, Leslie (Kerry) Meier, of Woodstock, Illinois; Richard (Melissa) Cromwell, of Midlothian, Virginia; Laurie (Jeff) Lauter, of Jakarta, Indonesia; and Melanie (Frank) Robinson, of Charlotte; and his six grandchildren, Hilary, Paulina, Christina, Shannon, Ryan and Jacob.
A memorial service to celebrate Guy’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Long’s Chapel, Lake Junaluska. Memorial donations may be made to Long’s Chapel, 133 Old Clyde Road Waynesville, NC 28785; or Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
