When Halloween season rolls around, some people pull the shades and hide. Others galavant around in homemade odes to witches, goblins, politicians and other scary figures. Luckily, we live in such a diverse community that regardless of your liking, there's probably a fall fest, costume contest or storytelling soiree to suit it. Below is a full week of Halloween events, for just about everyone.

Wednesday, Oct. 31

Trick or Treat at The Mountaineer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Costumed children will be given treats during business hours, before Treats on the Street begins. More info: 452-0661.

Treats on the Street, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Waynesville's Main Street. This is a fun adventure for costumed children and their parents to stroll the downtown district in search of delicious candy and special treats. More than 20 merchants are scheduled to participate, as will the Waynesville Fire and Police Department and First Baptist Church. More info: 456-3517.

VFW Trick or Treat, from 3 to 8 p.m., at VFW Post 5202, 216 Miller St. in Waynesville. The post will be handing out candy to all little ones dressed in costume. More info: 456-9346.

Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat, a night of food, games, inflatables, hayrides, cake walk, door prizes and lots of candy for the whole family, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 542 Iron Duff Road, Waynesville. More info: 627-1200.

Just Treats ... No Tricks, candy for costumed children 12 and under, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Beaverdam Community Center, 1620 N. Canton Road, Canton. More info: 648-0589.

New Hope Trunk or Treat, a Halloween celebration from 5 to 7 p.m., will be held at New Hope Church of God, located a half mile down Mauney Cove Road. More info: 456-3509.

Trunk or Treat/Fall Festival, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 542 Iron Duff Road in Waynesville. With games, inflatables, hayrides, cake walk, door prizes and lots of candy for the whole family. More info: 627-1200.

Plains Trunk or Treat, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Plains United Methodist Church, 2029 Newfound Road, Canton. Expect dogs, have a bonfire, play lots of games, and have trunks full of candy. More info: 648-5075.

Fall Celebration, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m at Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Waynesville, with a free hot dog, trunk or treat, a cupcake walk, bobbing for apples, pie the pastor, hayride, scarecrow smash, a pumpkin seed-spitting contest, hot cider and cocoa. More info: 452-1433.

Trunks and Treasures, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Beulah Baptist Church in Canton. Everyone is invited. More info: 648-6505.
